Family medicine
EDITOR’S NOTE: Following is the first of a two-part series on family chiropractic offices in Fostoria.

For two area chiropractic offices, family practice is a family affair.

Of the Lehmann Chiropractic Center on Tiffin Street and Wolph Chiropractic Wellness Center on South Main Street, the former is a sister-brother collaboration.

Dr. Steve Lehmann, chiropractor, said he learned from early childhood how chiropractic adjustment can improve health. He and his seven siblings didn’t get ear infections or other common childhood ailments and he thinks their chiropractic adjustments are the reason why.

The late Dr. Leonard Lehmann was a chiropractor in Fostoria who passed on his love of medicine to his children.

The younger Lehmann is now heading up the practice once led by his father. Lehmann’s sister, Lou Ann Brandeberry, is a massage therapist whose practice is on the premises.

Technically the siblings run separate businesses and Brandeberry is not an employee of Lehmann’s, Lehmann said.

“She’s her own boss,” he said.

But he said working in close proximity to each other makes it easy to refer patients.

Lehmann, a 1982 graduate of Fostoria High School, said he enjoys practicing in Fostoria because it offers a chance to see his classmates, their spouses, their parents and their children. They’re not “just a patient” but a member of his community, he said. Lehmann has been practicing in Fostoria for 20 years.

He said he takes pride in getting to know his patients. He recalled recently talking to a physician who, when asked about a particular patient, said he couldn’t remember because he didn’t have the patient’s file in front of him. Lehmann said he doesn’t see so many patients that he can’t keep track of them.

But he said the relationship between medical doctors and chiropractors is stronger now than when he started practicing and younger physicians, especially, will refer their patients to Lehmann.

Lehmann said he and his sister often work on the same patients. A chiropractic adjustment preceded by a full-body massage can be more effective than the adjustment alone, he said.

Lehmann said his sister frequently gives massages that last an hour and 15 minutes but only charges for an hour.

Patients are more interested in massage therapy now than they once were and often ask Lehmann about it even before he brings it up, he said.

Brandeberry has been a licensed massage therapist for eight years. She said she can do several different types of massage therapy. Most of her clients are referred by their doctors or chiropractors, but Brandeberry said she also hears from clients whose family members suggested they get a massage, and get gift certificates for it.

She likes working near her brother and can “turn to him if I have a question.”

Brandeberry said the Fostoria community is “very receptive to massage therapy.” In addition, she likes the sense of friendliness that comes with working in a small town.

With more than 50 years of service to the community, Lehmann Chiropractic has seen generations of families in Fostoria grow as their families have grown.

“This has been a family business going on continuously in this building since 1952,” Brandeberry said.
