Vera I. Gaertner

Vera I. Gaertner, 93, Findlay, died at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Fox Run Manor.
She was born June 8, 1916 in Cygnet to the late Lavern and Mammie (Brenner) Danniels. She married Edward Kuhn Jan. 17, 1934, and they divorced.
They had two children together, Raymond E. Kuhn, deceased; and Carol Kuhn (Winfield) Ziessler, Findlay. She had five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She later married Frank Gaertner Nov. 16, 1988, and he preceded her in death Feb. 28, 1997.
Vera is also survived by two stepdaughters, Nancy Schroeder and Betty Kuhn.
Vera formerly worked for RCA. She was a member of the Arcadia United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Moose Lodge #698 and the Amvets #21.
Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME with Pastor David Noel officiating and burial is in Fountain Cemetery, Fostoria.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Arcadia United Methodist Church in her memory.

Ruth J. Pickens

Ruth Jean Pickens, 77, Fostoria, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at her home.
She was born July 24, 1932, in Wayne, to Carl and Catherine (Milligan) Armstrong.
She married Raymond E. Pickens Dec. 29, 1948 in Greenup, Ky., and he preceded her in death Jan. 9, 1995.
Ruth is survived by her son, Carl (Lisa) Pickens, Pavo, Ga.; daughters, Claudia (Don) Myers, Fostoria; Dodie (Roger) Schneider, Manistique, Mich.; and Jan (Gary) Radcliff, Bloomdale; sister, Juanita Holt, Wapakoneta; 12 granchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her brother, Garland Armstrong.
Ruth retired in 1991 from Allied Signal after 30 years of service. She was a member of the Fostoria Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, was selected Woman of the Year in 2001, was the 2000 Chairperson for Fostoria Relay for Life, was 1996-1997 Volunteer of the Year for the American Cancer Society and a member of the United Methodist Women.
Visitation is 2-6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 at the funeral home with Pastor Michael Malcosky officiating.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Robert J. Simmons

Robert J. Simmons, 76, Tiffin, died at 4:46 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010 at the Ohio Veteran's Home, Sandusky.
Robert was born Feb. 4, 1933 to the late Joseph T. and Eleanor (Cornelius) Simmons in Pittsburgh, Pa. He married Suzanne Pahl Jan. 12, 1952 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin, and she died April 24, 2008.
Robert is survived by a son, Jeff Simmons, Whitehouse; a daughter, Andrea Imes, Fostoria; and five grandchildren, Mitch Simmons, Elayna Simmons and Christopher, Jeremy and Jamie Imes.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Simmons Jr. and Leonard Simmons; and one sister, Rose Picciuto.
Robert was a 1951 graduate of Calvert High School. In 1952, he signed and was briefly with the Cleveland Indians baseball team. He then joined the Army and served in the Korean War. Robert retired from the American Standard. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a life member of the Amvets Post 48 and the Knights of Columbus, 608.
Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 at Traunero Funeral Home, Tiffin.
The funeral will follow visitation at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Walters officiating. Burial will take place immediately following at St. Joseph Cemetery. The United Veteran's Council of Seneca County will perform military rites at the grave site.

Bernard B. Walker

Bernard B. "Bernie" Walker Sr., 62, Bloomdale and formerly of Fostoria, died at 10:03 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010.
He was born to Oscar and Bernal Walker.
Surviving are his ten children, Karen Newman, Dawn Lorah, Kaylynn Mallery, Bernie Walker Jr., Sharon Otto, Anthony Bower, Angel Black, Kelly Walker, Cami Walker and Rachel Walker; brother, Brian Walker; sister, Rose Thomason; mother and father-in-law Loretta and John Hutchison; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 at SMITH-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, North Baltimore, where the funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. with Pastor Susan Kronbach officiating.
Burial will follow in New Maplewood Cemetery, North Baltimore.
