Mohawks absorb whippingBy SHANNON DOVE

LIMA -- A balanced, unrelenting attack by Lima Perry put St. Wendelin on the defensive as the host Commodores thrashed the Mohawks 59-14 in non-league action Friday night.
"It's kind of like last week, it comes down to a lack of consistency." Mohawks coach Bill Hrabak said. "As an example, (quarterback) Chase (Beam) had a pretty decent game throwing the ball and after we scored that second touchdown, we had six consecutive drops. He was on target and if we catch those balls -- I don't know exactly what the score was at that time, but you know, if you get a couple of stops then maybe you start getting back into it.
"We've got to be more consistent catching the football. If we're going to be a throwing team, then obviously your receivers have got to catch the ball. We saw some positives from a throwing standpoint."
Perry scored a couple of quick touchdowns in the first quarter, with a 7-yard rush by Beau Blake and a 19-yard interception by Tanner Hunt 13 seconds later to go up 12-0. As time wound down, Ryan Knuckles broke a tackle at the 30 yard line and ran up the left sideline to score with 37 seconds left. The successful kick by Andrew Gipson put the Commodores up 19-0 at the end of one period.
Beam put the Mohawks on the board three minutes into the second quarter, rolling right after being flushed from the pocket and connecting with Alex Shontz, who had beat his defender before the throw and bolted 70 yards for the touchdown. Clare Berry converted the extra point, making it 19-7.
Less than a minute later Perry reclaimed its 19-point edge as John Turner pushed through the middle for a 5-yard rushing touchdown and Gipson added the extra point to extend Perry's lead to 26-7. Shortly thereafter Alonzo Williams recovered a Mohawks fumble and ran it 52 yards the other direction for the touchdown. Gipson's kick brought the score to 33-7, Commodores.
"Perry was hungry and they played hard. I take my hat off to them," Hrabak said. "When you see that you have an opportunity to jump on people you have to do that. That's something that our kids haven't learned yet. If you get in a situation where you can capitalize, you need to keep on mounting that on. That comes from experience and we haven't, unfortunately, had that opportunity to have that experience yet."
Beam and Brent Williams connected for a 72-yard touchdown play similar to the Mohawks' earlier score, as Beam rolled out and threw to Williams, who had beaten his defender prior to the throw. Williams then turned and ran unimpeded up the right sideline to the end zone, and Berry's kick put the score at 33-14.
Once again the Commodores answered immediately, scoring less than a minute later as Trevor Wallace hit Quis Woods with a 48-yard pass for the touchdown. Gipson's kick extended Perry's lead to 40-14 at the half.
Shawn Deal opened the second half with an 80-yard kickoff return, putting the Commodores up 47-14 after Gipson's kick. Later in the quarter Knuckles rushed 5 yards for his second touchdown of the game to extend Perry's advantage to 53-14. As time expired in the third quarter, Commodore quarterback Tyler Cornwell broke two tackles and rushed 47 yards for the 59-14 final.
"Zach Miller was all over the field tonight. Every time I looked, I saw number four over there," Hrabak said. "He took the pounding pretty well. He was running pretty well at the end of the game. I think Zach Miller did a great job.
"Same with Austin (Reinhart). Austin just plays hard for his 130-pouind body. Things will get better for both of those guys as they get older. These are kids we can utilize and build on."
