USV drubs St. Wendelin
By RYAN SWENAR

Quarterback Rhys Rose proved why he is one of the best in the Northwest Central Conference, completing 12 of 20 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns in Upper Scioto Valley's 54-6 win over St. Wendelin at Memorial Stadium in a season finale Friday night.

USV finished its season with a 6-4 record (3-4 NWCC), while St. Wendelin ended up 0-10 and 0-7.

Despite holding on to a 6-6 tie early in the first quarter, the Mohawks were unable to stop the Rams' relentless offensive attack.

“We just haven't been in this kind of situation enough this season,” said St. Wendelin coach Bill Hrabak of staying close in the early going. “Physically, they just wore us down. It's just how this season went.”

Hrabak was referring to USV running back Colby Salyer, who tore through the Mohawks' defense all night.

Salyer scored on four separate occasions in the last three quarters and threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to junior Trey Williams in the fourth quarter.

Salyer picked up 84 yards and two touchdown on four receptions, and 99 yards and two touchdowns on eight running attempts.

Rose, who also picked 179 yards and a touchdown on the ground, put the Rams on the board on their first possession when he found Stephen LaRue with a 16-yard scoring pass. Wodarski's two-point run fell two yards shy of the end zone.

St. Wendelin answered as Chase Beam threw a 68-yard touchdown bomb over the center of the field to a wide open George Iannantouno. Beam's two-point pass fell incomplete.

With 8:57 remaining in the first quarter, Rose found the end zone for a second time.

On second down from his own 34 yard line, Rose squeezed through an opening in the St. Wendelin defense, cut to the left, and tiptoed down the sideline for a 66-yard score.

Mohawks' defensive back Josh Rigsby potentially could have stopped the play deep in the backfield if a backtracking official hadn't accidentally blocked him.

Regardless, Rose effectively put the game away 4 minutes into the second quarter when he hit Salyer with 19-yard touchdown pass. Justin Beale missed the PAT kick.

After halftime, St. Wendelin tried to shore up its defense. Beam made nine tackles and intercepted a pass on the night, while Jacob Hay made five tackles and a sack.

But when Brett Wodarski smashed his way through a group of Mohawks for a 33-yard touchdown run and a 26-6 lead, the flood gates were opened for Salyer, who took over the scoring for the rest of the game.

“A lot of people have been faster (than us) this season,” Hrabak said. “It's something we will need to work on in the offseason.”

Salyer ran 18 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter before his scoring pass to Williams, and Salyer then finished off the Mohawks with a 50-yard sprint to the end zone. Beale kicked all three extra points.
