Bradner Legion planning veterans show
By Allison Wingate

The Albert Bowe American Legion Post #338 in Bradner will reprise its annual U.S.O. type show for veterans at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 31 after a year of absence.

Event organizer Judi Gonder cited time constraints as the reason for the show not taking place last year, but expressed enthusiasm for the lineup of entertainment the Halloween night event has in store.

In past years, the Post has honored over 100 veterans during the honorary dinner.

Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. free of charge to any veteran and their guest who make reservations with the Post on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Post welcomes veterans from any and all branches of the military.

Each veteran will be honored with a framed certificate and will have their picture taken for the annual scrapbook of the event. The families of those who have lost a loved one to war will be awarded with gold stars and commemorative plaques.

The variety act Spittin’ Image, consisting of identical twins Blain and Brian Swabb of Greenville, will provide the musical entertainment for the night. Their musical-comedy act tends to evolve, but can be counted on to include audience participation and rousing renditions of the official songs of each military branch.

The veterans in attendance often compete in how loudly and enthusiastically they can sing the songs of their branches.

“Every branch always thinks they’re better,” Gonder said. “Everyone gets really into it each time.”

Past performances have included Elvis impersonations and dressing volunteer audience members in hula gear such as grass skirts and coconut bras.

“They have something different every year,” said Gonder.

The event will be topped off with a decorative cake that displays the insignias of each military branch, designed by Tennissa Myers.

Reservations are required and should be made by Oct. 26 by calling the Post, 209 W. Crocker St., Bradner, after noon at 419-288-3634.
