Fostoria Red Cross seeking volunteers

The American Red Cross Fostoria Chapter, a United Way agency, released a report on its services for the first fiscal quarter, which ran from July 1 to Sept. 30.

Activities for the first quarter included attending the Seneca County Fair, a live T.V. auction, speaking engagements and two health fairs, bloodmobiles, local disaster relief and getting ready for the kick-off for Red Cross bingo starting Nov. 4.

The organization is looking for volunteers to fill several positions. Volunteers are needed for phone prospects and scheduling appointments for donors, assisting unloading or loading supplies and help set up at bloodmobile and baking cookies.

The chapter hosted 10 blood drives during the first quarter, collecting 297 units of blood. Twenty-seven persons donated blood for the fist time. The organization has met 117.9 percent of its year-to-date goal.

As of Oct. 16, 16-year-old high school students will be able to donate blood with written parental/guardian consent. Individuals who meet height and weight requirements and are in general good heath may be eligible to donate blood. A Red Cross donor card or valid ID is required.

The Disaster Action Team responded to an early morning duplex fire involving three adults and three children on Sept. 28. Both families were aided by the Red Cross with new clothing and shoes, emergency housing at the local motel. They also received six comforts kits issued, three teddy bears and food from the food pantry.

The chapter handled three emergency communications request from local families to military personnel in the first quarter.

A learn-to-swim program was held during the month of July under the direction of Amanda McClellan with 100 youth from Fostoria and the surrounding area participated.

The chapter also conducted one adult CPR with First Aid class and 14 certifications issued.

In July, 122 people and 1,098 meals were served. In August, 85 people and 765 meals were served. In September, 99 people and 891 meals were served, bringing the total to 306 people and 2,754 meals.

Preparations are underway for the holiday/Christmas basket give-away.
