Seneca East downs Lakota in 2 OTs

ATTICA — Cody Kidwell’s 7-yard run in the second overtime proved to be the difference as Seneca East squeaked past Lakota 12-6 in Friday night’s rain-soaked Midland Athletic League match up.

The stinging loss left Lakota still looking for a league win and dropped them to 3-4 on the season. Seneca East improved to 3-1 in the MAL and 4-3 overall.

“I don’t have any regrets,” said Raiders coach Jim Kelly. “I trust our kids and believe in them. Their effort was great. It’s a tough defeat but that’s just the way it goes sometimes.”

The unforgiving weather forced both teams to rely heavily on their running games.

On their first drive, the Tigers marched down the field emphatically. On second down, Kidwell was handed the ball, broke free in the middle of Lakota’s defense and zipped 62 yards for a touchdown. Sergio Eias missed the PAT.

Raiders’ tailback Jeremy Robbins, who rushed 113 yards from 29 carries, evened the score late in the second quarter, thanks to some quick thinking by quarterback Jon Timmons.

On fourth down, Timmons faked a punt and found receiver Jake Wiseman with a 19-yard pass, which put Lakota on its opponent’s 10-yard line. With a 9-yard run down the left side line and a 1-yarder up the gut, Robbins found the end zone. Timmons attempted 2-point conversion pass fell incomplete.

The rain fell harder after halftime, leading to several fumbled snaps.

On one occasion, Robbins was lined up on his own five-yard line to punt when a low snap forced him to down the ball and give Seneca East a perfect opportunity to score.

However, the Raiders defense came up big in the next series of plays. Consecutive sacks from Clay Hoffman, Ryan Zesing and Timmons forced the Tigers to punt the ball away.

With their defense playing some inspired ball, momentum began to swing in Lakota’s favor.

Robbins had a chance to snatch the win for the Raiders in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter with two field goal attempts. But the first attempt missed to the left and the second bounced off the crossbar, which sent the game into overtime.

Seneca East got the first shot in overtime, but was unable to put anything together. Likewise, the Raiders offense stalled and another missed field goal attempt prompted a second overtime period.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, on their next play Timmons coughed up the ball to a swarm of Seneca East defenders, giving the Tigers the perfect opportunity to win the game.

Kidwell made no mistake and found the end zone after two runs, winning the game in dramatic fashion.
