Fostoria fights off Norwalk in 5 setsMelanie Nye served for 15 points with three aces, set for 38 assists and made 16 digs Thursday night as Fostoria High School outlasted Norwalk 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 13-25, 15-10 in a Northern Ohio League marathon.
Katonya Lawson added 19 kills, six points and 22 digs and Allyson Beechum slammed 15 kills, made 21 digs and served four points as the Lady Red evened their overall record at 9-9 and moved to 4-6 in the NOL.
Also for Fostoria, Megan Manns served for 21 points with two aces and came up with 28 digs, Raina White had six points, three kills, 15 digs and seven assists, Tiffany Jackson swatted six kills and made five blocks. Alexis Cain hit three kills, made two blocks and added five digs and Sarah Hammer served for six points with two aces.
Fostoria won the junior varsity match 25-18, 20-25, 25-17.
Norwalk won the freshman match 26-24, 25-9.

ST. WENDELIN
FREMONT -- St. Wendelin fell to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the Midland Athletic League Thursday night with a 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 15-11 loss to Fremont St. Joseph.
Taylor Burns collected 17 kills, 11 points with a pair of aces, eight digs and six assists for the Mohawks, while Brooke Baker stashed 17 kills and added three lbocks, assists and two digs, Brittany Hargis had 10 points with two aces and eight digs and Lexie Valachovic notched seven points with an ace and 26 digs.
St. Wendelin also got five points with two aces and 22 assists from Tara Emerine, four points, 10 assists and eight kills from Meghan St. Clair, four points, 16 assists and two kills from Chelcie Rutter, four points with three aces and 13 assists from Veronica Peters and two kills apiece from Stephanie Wagner and Katelyn Schiefer.
St. Wendelin won the junior varsity match 25-21, 25-22.
St. Wendelin will host the Northwest Ohio Catholic Schools Association volleyball tournament Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
Matches will be played in both gyms, with a double-elimination format in use.
St. Wendelin will face Mansfield St. Peter's in a 9 a.m. first-round match. Other first-round matchups will be Vanlue against Sandusky St. Mary, Cardinal Stritch against Tiffin Calvert and Monclova Christian against Fremont St. Joseph.

NORTH BALTIMORE -- Brittany Egbert slammed eight kills and made five blocks Thursday night as state-ranked Hopewell-Loudon blasted North Baltimore 25-10 25-8, 25-5 in Midland Athletic League action.
Meghan Scherger swatted six kills and Alexis Creeger made 12 digs as the Division IV seventh-ranked Lady Chieftains improved to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in league play. Also for Hopewell-Loudon, Jessica Dull set for eight assists, Maggie Yost had seven assists and Eva Tanner came up with seven digs.
Hopewell-Loudon won the junior varsity match 25-11, 25-15.
NEW RIEGEL
BOUNCES BETTSVILLE
NEW RIEGEL -- Emma Ladd served for eight aces and clubbed 12 kills on 19-for-19 hiting Thursday night as undefeated New Riegel, ranked 10th in the state in Division IV, whipped Bettsville 25-4, 25-5, 25-2 in Midland Athletic League play.
Ashley Reinhart served for five aces and set for 15 assists and Breanna Hanna also served five aces as the Blue Jackets ran their record to 16-0 overall and 7-0 in the MAL.
Also for the Blue Jackets, Megan Mathias had three aces, Paula Kelbley slammed four kills, Brooke Scherger set for six assists and Paige Noftz and Shana Scherger each came up with five digs.
New Riegel won the junior varsity match 25-12, 25-16 as Stacey Wank servedfor five aces and slammed six kills. Hanna served for four aces and had five kills, while Holly Tiell had four aces and Megan Mathias set for six assists.

ELMWOOD IN THREE
BLOOMDALE -- Marissa Lee smacked eight kills and made two digs and Amanda Peters had six kills and four digs Thursday night, but Elmwood dropped a 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 Suburban Lakes League decision to Genoa.
LeeAnn Irwin added 20 digs and set for 13 assists, Brittany George hit two kills and had two digs and Sara Pollard made 15 digs as the Royals slipped to 5-11 overall and 3-6 in the SLL.
Also for the Royals, Kylie Snowden came up with six digs, Sara Auchmuty had five digs and Kati Bradford made three digs.
Elmwood dropped a freshman match to Toledo St. Ursula, 25-14, 25-14.
