Chapman returns to the scene of the crime (novel)

Naomi Chapman is at it again.

The Fostoria writer has a new book, "Criminal Company," coming out on Tuesday. Like all of Chapman's books, it is a thriller.

The main characters in the novel are Eli, his sister Natalie and Holly, who gets a job in the family business. Holly doesn't realize at first that Eli and his family are involved in criminal activity, Chapman said.

"A bunch of Eli's friends work there as well," she said.

Holly and Eli become a couple, but "she doesn't know about Eli's criminal activities," Chapman said.

Another person who works at the business, Luke, asks Holly out. One day Luke is beaten up and nearly killed, and the word is that Eli and his friends are responsible.

"That's when she starts to figure out that he might be doing bad stuff," Chapman said.

Meanwhile, Eli's sister Natalie is planning to steal money from their parents. She enlists a man named Wes to help her.

Then Eli finds out about Natalie's plans, and corners her.

"But then Wes comes in with a gun pointed at Holly's head," Chapman said.

That was as much plot as she was willing to disclose, not wanting to ruin the story.

Chapman's most recent previous book is "The Bathroom Strangler," which came out last year. She has written five books, including "Criminal Company."

"All of them are thrillers," she said.

She previously published her books with Publish America.

This time, Chapman is working with an e-book publisher. She said she submitted her book to them once before and they rejected it. Then she submitted the same book with a different title and they accepted it, she said.

Chapman said e-books are getting increasingly popular, and a lot of authors are going to the e-book format. You can buy an e-book online for $5 or so, she said.

"They're a lot cheaper than buying paperbacks," she said.

But "Criminal Company" will be available in paperback format as well as as an e-book. Chapman said it's available online at Amazon.com, and you can also go to any bookstore and have them order it.

Her previous books are "Bathroom Strangler," "Secret Past," The Digby Lake Killer" and "Wallet of Death."

Chapman has been interested in writing since childhood. She said her writings always tend to be violent, although she herself is quiet in real life. It's a trend that has surprised many of her friends, she said.

A student at Terra Community College, Chapman is pursuing an associate of art degree. She is also the mother of a five-year-old. Besides writing, her main hobby is running.

"I just run, hang out with my kid and write," she said.
