Making lemons into lemonade is Larry Rader's specialty.
He transformed the experience of being laid off from ThyssenKrupp Crankshaft into an opportunity to open a computer repair business in the modestly-sized building across the street from the plant, which he had been eyeing in his two years there as a supervisor.
"While I worked across the street I kept seeing this empty building and thought it was about time to open something up here," he said.
Rader quietly opened Cyberstorm Computers, a computer repair and sales shop at 936 Springville Ave., in late October and has since seen a steady stream of customers from contacts he made in previous computer sales ventures while he worked at the auto parts maker.
"I had a small opening because I had a lot of people that wanted work done and I needed to hurry up and get open so I could work on their computers," said Rader.
Cyberstorm Computers offers PC computer repairs, virus, adware (advertising-supported software) and malware (malicious software) removal, custom-built systems, new and used parts as well as new and used computers.
The typical turnaround for computers undergoing virus or adware removal is 24 hours. Rader said the work itself takes him only 4-6 hours but he prefers to further monitor the computers to ensure the problems are fully-resolved. These services cost $35 with software included.
To celebrate the opening, Rader is offering specials on used computers from $29 and up, and new computers from $299 and up.
A Bowling Green resident, Rader has plans to relocate to Fostoria to be closer to the business and remains positive about the business outlook for the community, despite having experienced the downturn first-hand.
"I know some of the main business is leaving town but I think the little businesses will help this town out," he said.
Rader also offers U-Haul moving services at his store including trucks, trailers and boxes. He sees the additional service as an incentive to get more potential customers into the store.
"Several people who have come to get U-Haul trucks have come back to get their computers fixed," he said.
As for the future, his plans include going back to school to further his education to help him offer the best computer service he possibly can.
"My over all goal is to bring great service at a low cost," he said.
Cyberstorm Computers is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and by appointment only on Sunday.
