Robbers in jail after pizza delivery driver fights back

A Fostoria pizza delivery woman fought back Wednesday when she was robbed at knife point at a South Countyline Street location.
Two Fostoria men are in jail today awaiting arraignment for charges of aggravated robbery after they reportedly lured the delivery driver to a pay phone in front of a South Countyline Street business and stole her money bag and cell phone, according to Police Chief John McGuire.
Jonathon L. Zickefoose, 40, has been charged with aggravated robbery while Rodney D. Hampton, 40, faces charges of aggravated robbery, tampering with evidence, and possession of crack cocaine pending lab results.
Fostoria Police Department officers responded to a call at 12:14 a.m. from a Findlay Street resident who reported a suspicious red vehicle containing two occupants was parked alongside the road with its lights turned off.
An officer approached the vehicle to investigate when Hampton, a passenger in the vehicle, fled on foot, cutting through several yards in the neighborhood.
A second officer went in pursuit of Hampton after hearing a woman screaming in the vicinity, while the other officer remained with Zickefoose and later took him into custody.
Residents within the vicinity of where Hampton had fled told officers that some type of altercation had occurred. The officers also noticed a "large amount of blood throughout the neighborhood and yards," according to Police Chief John McGuire.
While in pursuit of the suspect, a third officer received a call stating a pizza delivery driver had just been robbed in the same area. A black male approached the female delivery driver and grabbed both of her arms.
According to McGuire, the male subject, later identified as Hampton, demanded her money bag and produced a utility knife when the woman said she did not have it.
Hampton, listed by police as being 6'2" and 260 pounds, wrestled the driver to the ground, during which she was able to grab the knife from his hands and cut him in the process. After another struggle, Hampton allegedly took back the utility knife and ran to the delivery driver's car, from which he took the money bag and the driver's cell phone and fled the scene on foot.
An employee of the South Countyline Street business confirmed the red vehicle involved in the earlier stop was in the parking lot when the order was made to the pizza place.
The officers followed a trail of blood through neighboring yards to a property in the 400 block of West Crocker Street, where they found Hampton hiding beneath a tarp draped over a swing set and bleeding from the hand. Hampton was uncooperative with officers and had to be ordered out by gunpoint.
Hampton was taken into custody and transported to Fostoria Community Hospital for treatment of the laceration on his hand. Drug paraphernalia with residue was found in Hampton's possession and was sent to the lab for testing.
Upon further search of the area, the money bag and cell phone taken in the robbery were found on a shelf in a garage at a nearby property, and the utility knife had been thrown on the garage's roof. The premises was searched with permission from the property owners.
"It was a nice job by the officers, not only in tracking him down, but in finding the money bag and the victim's cell phone, and even the utility knife used in the robbery," said McGuire. "It was an excellent job, and it all started by a citizen who called and happened to see a red car that didn't seem like it belonged in the neighborhood."
Both suspects remain incarcerated on no bond until they appear in court within the next 48 hours, McGuire said.
