Agencies ready holiday feasts

Area humanitarian organizations are making sure that more dinner tables and stomachs will be full in Fostoria on Thanksgiving.

Applications from income-eligible families are being accepted this week by the Bureau of Concern at their 301 S. Main St. office for its annual Thanksgiving basket program.

Chosen families will be awarded with "everything they need for the Thanksgiving dinner, excluding pies," said Bureau of Concern executive director Mary Zeigler.

Zeigler also said the Bureau is favoring families over single persons and seniors, but these groups should still apply in the case there are leftover baskets.

Those who are awarded with meals will be notified via postcard and will be instructed where and when to pick up their baskets.

The Bureau of Concern is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday and Friday.

For more information on this program and others, call the Bureau at 419-435-4357.

The Sharing Kitchen of Fostoria will offer a holiday meal on Nov. 25 at its 321 N. Main St. location with all of the traditional Thanksgiving trimmings.

On the menu is turkey and ham, stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh corn, rolls with butter, pies and cake.

Phyllis Hulderman of the Sharing Kitchen is already preparing parts of the meal as she expects an upwards of 200 people to come during their 9:15-11:45 a.m. dinner hours that day.

"I've already cooked five turkeys and I've cut the meat off of the bone and froze it covered in broth," she said. "We'll make the hams the day of."

Hulderman said the Thanksgiving crowd competes with that of Christmas and attendance typically increases towards the end of the month when money is tighter and food stamps have been spent.

Volunteers from the St. Wendelin Parish are slated to assist the Sharing Kitchen staff with the serving and clean up portion of the meal.

While there are enough volunteers for the holiday meal, the Sharing Kitchen welcomes volunteers for other meals. Those interested should call Hulderman at 419-435-6976.

The Fostoria Red Cross food pantry will be open to the public on the Monday preceding the holiday and the Friday afterward from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

For more information on the food pantry program, call the Fostoria Red Cross at 419-435-5360.
