Hunt begins to fill Fostoria BOE vacancy
By ALLISON WINGATE

The search is under way to fill a vacancy on the Fostoria Community Schools Board of Education.

Long-time board members Linda Anderson and Deb Ward did not seek re-election to the board. One of those seats will be filled in January by Pat Grine who ran unopposed for a seat. Candidate Dave Guernsey was a shoe-in for the other seat, but he dropped out of the race before the general election.

The board may come up with any method of its choosing to search for a viable candidate, whether it be through public interviews or by scouting potential board members. But there are a few simple rules that must be followed, Hollie Reedy, director of legal services for the Ohio School Boards Association, said.

"The board will start on January 1 with four members and will begin the board vacancy process. They will have 30 days to fill the vacancy, but they cannot fill it within the first ten days," Reedy explained.

Although the board cannot fill the position until Jan. 10, the interviewing process may begin now, something that has been delayed due to the general election, according to board member Tim Masel.

"We haven't been real active in looking because two of the four members have just been elected," said Masel. "But we have talked with some people and some have shown interest."

Masel said the only qualifications for the job is that the person must live within the Fostoria school district and must care about Fostoria Community Schools.

Board of education members set direct policies that govern the school system and meet once a month or more, as needed.

According to Fostoria Community Schools treasurer Jaime Golupski, board of education members are paid $1,500 for attending a minimum of 12 mandatory meetings per year, and are not paid until this requirement is fulfilled.

The board will be confronted with another large task on top of selecting a new member come Jan, 1 -- selecting a new Fostoria Community Schools superintendent.

"After the first of the year, that is going to be our major duty," Masel said.

Those interested in filling the vacant position may contact Masel at 419-619-1776.

“ I would like the public to remember that Anthony Thompson will also be a new member of the Fostoria Board of Education. He also ran unopposed in the Nov. 3rd election and will fill one of the three available seats made vacant by exiting Jo Hollingsworth, Debra Ward, and Linda Anderson.

Regards,

Patrick D. Grine
