Napoleon gets away from Fostoria, 55-43
By RYAN SWENAR

SPORTS WRITER

Following a strong performance against reigning Northern Ohio League champion Tiffin Columbian last Saturday, Fostoria High School sought to carry some momentum into Tuesday night's non-league game against Napoleon.

And indeed, the Lady Red were down only 25-24 at halftime.

However, a surging Napoleon team outscored Fostoria 16-6 in the third period and raised its record to 3-0 with a 55-43 non-league decision.

Though he saw his squad fall to 0-3, FHS coach Mat Swortchek was proud of his team's progress.

"We've improved every game," Swortchek said. "The game against Tiffin (Columbian) gave us a lot of confidence. This was another good team. They were 2-0 coming in and I think we looked all right against them."

The game started slowly for both teams, but Napoleon began to pull away four minutes into the game and settled the first period with a 12-7 advantage.

Aja Hall led Fostoria to second-quarter revival by tossing in 11 consecutive points in the last three minutes of the half to trim the Lady Red deficit to one.

Hall ended up topping the game's scoring chart with 26 points, while teammate Veronica Wonderly added 11 and made three steals.

But Napoleon's relentless defense left the Lady Red in a scoring slump in the third quarter.

To make matters worse for Fostoria, the Wildcats enjoyed a scoring spree at the end of the period, putting up nine unanswered points within three minutes.

"Our offense went stagnant," Swortchek said. "Defensively, we were good, but we went almost four minutes without a basket."

Napoleon coach Rod Hersha lectured his players at halftime, but he was proud of his team's third-quarter performance.

"I think the game was decided in the second half," Hersha said.

"Katelyn Hesterman, who was in foul trouble in the first half, came off the bench at half and gave us a lift."

Hesterman scored 12 points overall, half of which came in the third and fourth periods.

Fostoria came out strong in the final quarter but was only able to close the gap to 46-37 before the Wildcats put the game away.

Bethany Behnfeldt led the Wildcats with 15 points and Megan Zachrich scored 12.

Hall added nine rebounds and a pair of steals to her night's work, while teammate Tiffany Jackson grabbed seven rebounds.

Napoleon won the junior varsity game 55-18. Alayna Schlade led with 11 points for the Wildcats while Stephanie Porter scored six for Fostoria.
