Murder attempt foiled

A Fostoria man apparently killed himself Monday following a murder-suicide attempt foiled by another man's quick reaction.

Fostoria police were called to a home at 120 W. Eagle St. at 5:43 a.m. after a man reported he opened his front door and was shot at by Jordan Hacker, 21, 655 W. North St.

Hacker came to the home under the guise of having information regarding a sick family member in the hospital, but brandished a handgun when the male subject came to the door, according to Fostoria Police Chief John McGuire.

McGuire said the intended victim, whose name is not being released at this time, suffered a flash burn to the forearm after the bullet went through the front door and lodged in a wall.

"By luck, by the grace of God, by a miracle, he was able to duck when he saw the subject pull out the firearm," McGuire said.

The victim called police and said Hacker had fled across the street on foot.

Officers, with the help of a K-9 unit, found Hacker's body at the southwest corner of South Main and West Eagle streets.

"He had fled the scene on foot, jumped over a fence and took his own life with the same firearm," McGuire said.

McGuire said Hacker's vehicle was parked at the West Eagle Street location and his identity was discovered.

A search of Hacker's home revealed a note which indicated he possibly planned to cause two deaths -- one his own, according to McGuire.

"It looks like his intent was to attempt to injure or murder this other male subject," McGuire said.

McGuire said the police are confident Hacker is the person who fired the gun at the caller.

"We talked with the family, who stated he was having some medication problems for a serious back injury and was acting strangely the last couple of days," McGuire said.

Two shell casings were found at the scenes: one in the wall at the West Eagle Street residence and one near Hacker's body.

McGuire said it is unclear exactly why the victim was targeted by Hacker, but that it may have something to do with a relationship Hacker's girlfriend had with the victim five years ago.

Hacker's girlfriend has been out of town for the past few days and was not in Fostoria when the incident occurred, according to McGuire.
