Columbian bumps FHS
By RYAN SWENAR

Fostoria High School gave the defending Northern Ohio League champions something to think about Saturday before visiting Tiffin Columbian made off with a 54-39 victory in the NOL opener for both teams.

Maya Brown scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Tornadoes, who improved to 3-0, while the Lady Red fell to 0-2.

Columbian opened up a 27-17 lead early in the third period after leading 19-13 at halftime. But a 15-5 streak by the Lady Red, sparked by back-to-back 3-point shots by Taylor Newlove and an Aja Hall layup and concluded by Veronica Wonderly's 3-ball, tied the game at 32 with 1:10 left in the period.

However, Fostoria got into foul trouble in the fourth quarter, which put the fast-breaking Tornadoes into the bonus early in the period.

“The fourth quarter was the game changer,” FHS coach Matt Swortchek said. “It wasn't so much them shutting us down as it was us getting fouls. Eight of their 18 points came from the line.”

Hall finished with a team-high 15 points on the day and is now 94 points away from breaking Fostoria's scoring record. The senior became the school's all-time rebounding leader in a season-opening loss to Rossford.

“I thought our offense did well compared to years past, when we've struggled against Tiffin,” Swortchek said. “I think we've figured out a way to minimize their size.”

Columbian coach Larry Kisabeth thought his team was capable of a better performance.

“We have to do a better job disciplining ourselves on offense,” Kisabeth said. “The shots we took weren't necessarily bad shots but they weren't as good as we were capable of getting.

“This is a tough place to play and it always has been. I thought Fostoria was well prepared for us.”

Six-foot-two standout Jill Stein, who has signed to play at Bowling Green State University, scored 13 points, while 6-2 teammate Lexi Rohrbach added 11 points and hauled down 12 boards as Columbian outrebounded FHS 28-18.

Wonderly tossed in 14 points, while Hall and Erica Depp led FHS' rebounding with six apiece.

Tiffin Columbian won the junior varsity game 35-16. Tori Stephens scored 12 points for the Tornadoes, while Courtney Hall led Fostoria with eight.
